Biographical Information:
(1840-1918); PPM, UCL; PhD (Heidelberg); FRS; A, maths: Elem Geom: Congruent Figures (Longmans 79),10th LMS pres 82-84; Vectors and Rotors 4/04 w/ G.C. Turner; bn in Denmark; studied maths in germany under Alfed Clebsch and then with Ludwig Otto Hesse at Heidelberg; Went to Berlin to study under Karl Weierstrass and Leopold Kronecker. Emigrated to England in 1865; in 1870 he succeeded Hirst as Prof of Pure maths at Univ Coll. where he introduce Proj Geom; from 84-11 he was Prof of Mechanics and math at Central Technical Col in So. Kensington.
